Lacoste
Originally created for his own personal use, French tennis icon René Lacoste had no idea his creation would lead to such a widely recognised brand.
The world famous crocodile logo has an interesting history, starting with a bet between a fellow teammate. Lacoste stated that if he was to win the next match, his teammate must buy him a crocodile suitcase he’d seen in a boutique. A news reporter covering the team’s unfortunate loss caught on to the story and quoted “the young Lacoste has not won his crocodile skin suitcase but he fought like a real crocodile”. From that point on, Lacoste wore a crocodile on his blazer which appeared on all his future apparel. In 1933 Lacoste and his business partner André Gillier began to create tennis T-shirts featuring the crocodile logo for the mass market.
After the success of the tennis shirts, Lacoste expanded into Lacoste footwear, perfumes and accessories and continued to create innovative new products until his death in 1996. Since its humble small scale beginnings, Lacoste is sold in over 110 countries and has contracts with top tennis stars such as Andy Roddick and John Isner which has added to its success.
