The brand has firm male roots since it was launched by the tennis champ Fred Perry as the original sports wear brand. Fred Perry polo shirts evolved from the tennis courts when it was claimed by the music scene – from the ‘mods’ of the seventies to the indie bands of the nineties. Fred Perry polo shirts have been worn by everyone from Paul Weller to the Arctic Monkeys. In 2009, the brand launched a special anniversary Fred Perry polo shirt for men to mark a hundred years since the tennis star’s birth. And although women love Fred Perry, it looks like the gender bias could swing the other way as the fashion label has asked a female musician to spearhead the next Fred Perry collection. And although the classic polo shirts have been embraced by musicians with attitude, the clothes have always kept their classic, authentic look. Amy Winehouse is one of the most rebellious names around and fans are expecting a truly edgy collection from the star. Winehouse has already created a 17-piece women’s wear line for the company with a further three collections in the pipeline. The star may be only 26 but she’s clearly following in the lines of other big celebrities like Pete Doherty who designed clothes for Gio Goi. Her collections will include unique Fred Perry polo shirts, jumper dresses and Harrington jackets. Rhythmic Designs Music and fashion have always been close bed-partners. As well as Pete Doherty, Lilly Allen created a collection for New Look and Beth Ditto is designing a range with Evans. The MD of Fred Perry, John Flynn, said to the press: “We are excited that Amy is working with us on this quite unique project. We have had a great relationship with her over the years as she has been a loyal fan and supporter.” As expected her Fred Perry range will include what have been dubbed ‘dangerously short’ pencil skirts – which the star is already associated with. The defining colour palette will be pink and black, for a sharp, sexy look full of attitude – just like the pop star herself.
